This release is essentially identical to the previous release functionality-wise, but it has the following additions:

  • Russian translation (contributed from Konstantin Lavrov)
  • German translation (ported from the built-in version)
  • Menu integration – the menu now appears in Tools – Solver… (contributed from Konstantin Lavrov)

Known issues (to be worked on soonish):

  • Strings ‘Target cell address empty’ and ‘Decision variable cells empty’ are not yet localized.
  • Some strings don’t fit within the dialog.

This package is a hybrid extension for both Windows and Linux x86. Note that I have experienced some major stability issues with the Extension Manager of the Linux version of OpenOffice.org (Sun version), so if you experience a crash or freeze during installation of this extension from the Extension Manager UI, please try installing it using the unopkg command line utility. To install from the command line, run

/opt/openoffice.org2.3/program/unopkg add -f scsolver.uno.oxt

Once installed, try not to open the Extension Manager as doing that might cause OO.o to crash.

Installation

Extension Manager

To install from the Extension Manager, follow these steps:

  1. Launch Calc.
  2. Select Tools > Extension Manager.
  3. While the “My Extensions” item is selected, click Add. This will bring up a file selection dialog. Locate and add the Solver package that you downloaded from the above link.
  4. If all goes well, you will see scsolver.uno.zip enabled under My Extensions category in the Extension Manager dialog.
  5. Exit the dialog by clicking Close.
  6. Open a new Calc window by File > New > Spreadsheet.
  7. You should see the floating toolbar with the Solver label on it.

From Command Line (unopkg)

To install via unopkg command line utility, run the following command:

/opt/openoffice.org2.3/program/unopkg add -f scsolver.uno.oxt  (Linux)
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.3\program\unopkg.com add -f scsolver.uno.oxt (Windows)

Note for Linux users who use distro-provided OpenOffice.org

If you are a Linux user, the version of OO.o your distro ships likely has my Solver already integrated. Look under Tools > Solver… to see if it’s there. If it’s there, please don’t install this extension as it will cause stability problems.
